ULTIMATE CONDITION, SHINE & STAMINA

Oil is well known for its "glycogen sparing" benefits, being utilised by the horse when working at lower intensities. This spares valuable glycogen reserves for use by the muscles when work intensity goes up and allows the horse to perform for longer before the onset of fatigue. What may be less well known though, is that certain vitamins and minerals, such as the antioxidants, selenium and vitamin E, are vital for the enhanced utilisation of fats and oils, so adding straight oil to the diet may not be the most efficient feeding method.

Ultimate Finish, from Baileys Horse Feeds, is a unique, palatable and "mess free" way of feeding oil, with the added benefit of containing appropriate levels of vitamin E and selenium, as well as Vitamin C, which also has antioxidant properties, and a yeast culture. An extruded, high oil supplementary feed, Ultimate Finish is manufactured by Buckeye Nutrition, Ohio, USA, for whom Baileys are sole European agents. Its reputation as an excellent non-heating boost to stamina has been gained as "Buckeye Equine Energy" amongst those feeding race and performance horses.

Because oil provides about 2 ¼ times more calories than carbohydrates from cereals it is also excellent for promoting weight gain. "We often found that we were recommending "Equine Energy" to help horses put on weight," says Emma Case, nutritionist on the Baileys Helpline. "Customers were frequently put off by the product's name though, as the word "energy" invokes the wrong image for those to whom "non-heating" is the priority!" So when the American manufacturers changed "Equine Energy" to "Ultimate Finish", Baileys were keen to follow suit!

Ultimate Finish can provide an increase in non-heating calories without significantly increasing the volume of feed, or the level of starch, in the diet. This makes it ideal for promoting weight gain, especially in those prone to laminitis, and as an energy source for any horses whose starch intake should be minimised, such as those with ERS. With a blend of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, it is also excellent for producing superb coat condition and shine in show horses, when fed at lower levels, making it the truly versatile option for the "ultimate finish"!

Ultimate Finish retails in 6kg tubs at around £16.95 and in 20kg bags at around £27.95. For more information contact Baileys Horse Feeds on 01371 850247 or info@baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk.
